Unknown and Unknowable

I think we, myself specifically, fears most what is unknown. I find myself in unfamiliar waters and naturally want to tuck and run back to what feels safe where I know what I know works for me. But where is the fun in that? Just like the body we get stronger the harder we push ourselves. It takes breaking down the muscle for it to rebuild back with more strength.

A few weeks ago I competed in my second Crossfit competition. I trained hard for several months before. I was in the gym multiple times a day 4-6 days a week. I THOUGHT I was ready for anything that could have been asked of me, but boy was I wrong. I competed in the scaled division simply because there are still some movements, like muscle ups, that I still cannot do. This was a 1 on 1 competition meaning I went head to head with another female in my division.




If you know me at all you know that I fear/hate being the center of attention so when my name was the very first name pulled of the entire competition my nerves were uncontrollable! But giving that I love squats when my workout was named I felt confident that I would win. 25 front squats then a 400 meter sprint for time.... I finished my 25 squats while my competitor was still on about 20. Then came the sprint. I am not sure if you have ever done 25 squats then tried to sprint but my legs did not want to work. I felt like I had drop foot. I literally could NOT pick my legs up. I almost busted on my face! Needless to say... she caught me on the run. Loss number one!


Second workout was the obstacle course... which I feared the moment it was announced the week before. I don't know how to jump walls or run through tires. This workout did not count against me but helped separate ties. So here goes nothing. A sled pull, several over the box jumps, then came the first wall..... I was ready to go I jump muscle myself up and get ready to jump over WHEN my foot gets tripped up and I DID actually fall flat on my face. I try to stumble up as fast as possible and run to the tires where I decide to walk through so I don't fall again. From there I ran and picked up a 20lb medicine ball ran with it to a balance beam where I walked across it (thanks hidden talent for allowing me to do that with ease). Next I had the great joy to jump over a second wall... in which I was able to do without busting my face again. From there you run again... which I again realize I am slower than a snail.




Third workout in three hours. Have I mentioned that this whole competition is outside and it is 97+ degrees outside? This time my name gets pulled for guess what? ANOTHER RUN... a sled pull. Some how I actually pulled that sled faster than the girl I was going against. Win number one!





After an hour lunch break workout number four got started. At this point in time the heat was really getting to me. There were several different workouts I could have been drawn for lots that I would have been really good at. Snatches, dead lifts, overhead squats but instead I get pulled for a row and jumping pull ups workout. I was against two girls on this one. It was a 5 minute AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) That was the longest five minutes of the day. I HATE jumping pull ups. I am tall so to go full range of motion I am having to go into a complete squat then jump above to bar... that plus a 200 meter row with the heat I was BEAT! I, for the first time, laid on the ground after a workout.

During that workout people were starting to get actual burns with blisters from how hot the barbells were. At that point while frustrated I wasn't getting workouts that I was actually good at and could maybe win I was beyond thankful my "money makers" (yes yes my hands) were not covered in burn blisters.

5th and final workout in 6 hours again could have had several things I would have been great at. Things I had spent the last several months training for. But no again I end up with push ups and a row. At this point in time my goal of winning changed to finish and don't pass out. I pushed through my push ups finishing after my competitor but she struggled getting on the rower. We started pulling about the same time. She hit 300 meters only seconds before I did. I was disappointed in not winning but I was grateful for finishing. I ended up placing 19th in the competition which I was ok with considering what I trained so hard for was not what I was tested on. But is that not exactly what crossfit is about. Being prepared for the unknown and unknowable?

Two weeks later I tested my "science project" Does Crossfit prepare you for long distance activity? It was not like I went out and ran a half after sitting on the couch for a year. I had put hours and hours in the gym getting better faster stronger. I ran here and there but not one small bit of training to prepare my body for a half marathon. I planned on going out and running 13.1 without ever actually running a long run. After the crossfit competition I started really freaking myself out about this race. But the day came whether I liked it or not. It was a night run in Rosewell Georgia. In my mind I thought it would be 13 miles through a downtown entertainment type district with lights and people cheering us on. But with a 630 PM run when do you eat? What do you eat for fuel without feeling all bloated? How do you know what your body will need ESP when you haven't been training your body to run that distance? What happens if I cannot physically finish the race?



Well race time came quickly that day. When we pulled up to a park that was in the middle of a two way street I knew that what I had in mind for a night run was indeed completely wrong. The route was a 3.5 down and back then a 3 down and back in the opposite direction. My friend Erin and I stayed together for a whole two miles. She had worked hard to prepare for this race where I had not. We ran the Mercedes half together when she lived in Birmingham so in my, I can do anything, mind I thought I could keep her pace. Well she took off from me after I needed a walk break before she did. On mile three there was a huge hill that I took the time to walk. Shortly after the crazy hill where the first turn around and they directed us through the woods on a gravel road I was starting to panic. I did not sign up for a trail run! And the next 10 miles alone is going to suck!

About that time I was taking yet another short walk break this cute young girl asked me if I wanted to start running with her at the next big tree. I said I would love to. After some convo I find out she is a 19 year old college student who was running her first half marathon BY HERSELF! She became my new best friend for the next 9 miles! We stuck together running and walking making it mile after mile. Little did we know after the water stop at mile 5 we would not have the opportunity to get water for the rest of the race. YES you heard correctly an Atlanta running company who put on a half marathon RAN OUT OF WATER! The second half of the race was miserable to put it nicely! It was dark, I was thirsty, it started raining, and my body started failing me. My whole hip complex did not want to cooperate. Honestly I hurt more when I walked than when I was running. But Jill (my new running friend) and I pushed each other to complete the race. I finished my fourth half marathon... another 13.1 under my belt. "It will be slow, tedious, painful, probably unnoticed by poeple, but the end result will be glorious!"




 I a few days later can not say that I will ever do another half. I find throwing around a heavy barbell much more enjoyable than running for hours on end. I can successfully say I have ran four half marathons and competed in two crossfit competitions. I look forward to continually growing and seeing what I am capable of. I would like to compete in a handful more competitions as a scaled competitor while perfecting some skills to be able to one day competitively compete RX and maybe even make it to regionals! Earned. Never Given!

So I am a little less than 4 weeks from my next Crossfit competition. And a little less than 7 weeks from my next half marathon.
(And I'm sure noone has noticed the 100+ degree weather lately. If you haven't been outside just check Facebook. Everyone has made it a fun game to post pictures of how hot it is in their car...)
I have always loved quotes. Especially when I have a goal in mind. "Earned. Never Given" is my current motivational theme. I'm not sure but I think it maybe a Marines theme but I am adopting it for now. For me that means nothing is free. Everything has a price! The strength and ability to compete and or run another half marathon is not going to be given to me. (esp in this heat) It is going to be hard work. I look forward to pushing myself and seeing how far I have come!

STRONG IS THE NEW skinny

These days there is so much pressure to be "skinny". The "skinny" girls gets all the guys. All the girls want to be "skinny". Well, I can honestly say there is not one "skinny" bone in my body and I am just fine with it! "I praise you becuase I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." Psalms 139:14
I love that I am strong! I love that if I have had a bad day there is a barbell with some heavy weights on it that I can pick it up and throw it down. Now I am no Elisabeth Akinwale but one day MAYBE :) In the last six months I have gained more strength than when I played basketball year round. I can do things like pull ups and olymipic lifts I've never done before in my life.


Dont get me wrong I have a LONG way to go... but not only do I love being strong I love having a fun CrossFit community that I can be strong with!

The Barter System...

As I sit under the dryer my hair looking like a blonde fro I am beyond thankful for two hours of "me" time! And a "free" haircut! Seriously why doesn't more of the world work off the barter system? Hair cuts, food, gym, chiropractics, lawyers, accountants, and dentists... All I need is a drug rep, rent and GAS and I'd be set! Ha, but seriously starting my own business was one of the best decisions I have ever made! Approaching a year of being my own boss I think back to what I was thinking and feeling this time last year.... Loving your job but hating your work is a miserable way to live. I decided to trust that my Lord and Savior would take care of me. My job, my work is now my happy place! I truly believe that is the way it is supposed to be! I would work for free IF the world could barter all my need with me.... Unfortunately there are places that still expect me to pay with actual money instead of massage! Until then i will continue to love my job!

The last few weeks....uh-- months :-/

Well there is just no point in having a blog if I never take the time to actually write in it. I am blaming the last week of the month being the week after spring break but it has been a slower than normal work week for me so it is time to get productive! I am looking through my "TO DO by 121212" list and let me give a little update!...

1. I recently finished the book The Vow (yes that makes three-- I am not too far behind on my book a month goal. I for some reason am a sucker for a girly love story. Only because I refuse to spend money at the movies I have not seen the movie but it is on my "must red box" list. I am needing suggestions on good books to read!

2. Trying new paleo recipes once a week--- yeahhhh not happened! I did really good for a few weeks then I stopped trying new stuff and having the same ole same ole every week. BUT tomorrow will be 3 months of being on paleo! 15 lbs down and I feel great! What I ended up doing is every Sunday I would cook enough food for the week. For lunch and dinner. I enjoyed spending that time in the kitchen and I didnt have to worry about cheating! And when I run out of food The Cajun Cleaver was always to the rescue! If you arent buying your meat and paleo meals from Nick you are crazy! :)

3. ok, so who knew I was so competitive?? When I said I needed to do CrossFit 3 times per week I didnt realize I would love it so much! I have been going 4-5 times per week every week! I decided the best thing to do was to take off every day from 12-2 for CrossFit and lunch! I seriously have the best job! I have set several PRs! and can now do double unders! A pull up! and Toes to bars! woohoo! I cant wait to see how far I come in the next few months!


4. I havent posted since I added another four legged furry friend :) Meet Baxter! my lil man! He is such a perfect little puppy! At first he got up every morning at 6AM so I took that time to teach myself how to get up early enough to get things done... That lasted a whole---- 3 weeks?? Now when he gets up I let him use the bathroom and then put him in the bed with LOLO and me!... oops I still over sleep! Why would you want to get up and be productive when you could cuddle with these two? I will try to do better next week!

5. I currently joined a creative professionalism small group. It has been fun meeting new people who are small creative business professionals like myself! I am still looking for another good bible study to join...

6. I have started adding some running back into my life. Saturday I am running my first 5K yes yes I have ran 3 half marathons but never a 5K. I am enjoying adding runs back in... If you are looking for someone to run with we run Mondays at 6 from TinRoof in the Lakeview district and Wednesdays at 530 from the Trak Shak in Homewood. My goal would be to run that next half in Oct, Nov Dec ish...

7. Since I have been doing Paleo for 3 months now that means NO sugar in my life... For the first month I did not take a single cheat. That was... NOT fun. But now I will take a cheat on Saturdays... bring on the ice cream or cookies or cake! but only on Saturdays! :)

Well I am not done with my to do list but I am working on it!

Heaven is Forreal

So far the hardest part of my "to do" list by 12/12/12 is reading a book a month. Ugh. Who has time to read? I find myself doing just about anything besides reading. I did read the book Heaven is Forreal in less than 24 hours. Only one book down 11 to go! :-/
I think I found myself being able to read this book so easily is because who can argue with a child? I kept reading curious on what was going to happen next. I loved reading about the love and faith of a child!
I also got to go to Samford to hear the parents/author of this book. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting but it was still a good experience. After reading and hearing negative feedback from this book I find myself praying that noone could read this book with anything but an open heart and mind. I do not believe the parents of this boy published this book for any other reason but to help those who questioned if Heaven was Forreal.
If you haven't had a chance to read this book I challenge you to read it!

Paleo Sweet Potato Fries

Last weekend I took time to spend with my wonderful grandparents. My Daddy Glen can cook the best steak I've ever had in my lifetime. While I had him cook us a steak my nanny and I made paleo sweet potato fries. A simple but wonderful side ESP for a steak or hamburger!

Ingredients:
Sweet potatoes
Egg whites
Sea salt
Pepper
Garlic

Directions:
Peel then cut sweet potatoes in strips (like French fries)
Dip in egg whites
Season with your favorite dry seasonings. (I used sea salt, pepper, and garlic)

Bake at 350 for about 40 minutes or until fries are soft and crunchy at the same time (just like I like my chocolate chip cookies :-)

Talk about YUMMY!!! :-)

Paleo Blueberry Muffins

Tomorrow will be 4 weeks without a bite of sugar, flour, dairy, grains, legumes, processed foods, or fast food... I love PALEO! I feel great! But I have enjoyed making paleo friendly foods I craved during the last 4 weeks.

I googled several paleo blueberry muffins and combined two that I thought sounded best.

Ingredients:
5 eggs
1/2 cup melted coconut oil
3/4 cup almond milk
1 tsp vanilla
2 tbs honey
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup coconut flour
1/2 cup almond flour
1 cup blueberries

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350
Combine wet ingredients until smooth
Mix in dry ingredients
Scoop spoonfuls into muffin liners
Bake 25 mins until golden brown

CONFESSION TIME!! --I tried to make these a few weeks ago. I took pictures of how good the batter looked (and smelled due to all the coconut) baked them for about 20 minutes and had this revelation about remembering eggs were apart of this recipe. Needless to say.... I forgot the FIVE eggs the first go around. Of course I still tasted the first batch. I concluded that without eggs this was the perfect recipe for paleo cereal. "forget" the eggs bake then let it cool off and put in bowl and add almond milk for paleo coconut blueberry cereal!

When I tried this recipe WITH eggs it was a delicious blueberry muffin! (better the second day)

Paleo brownies yummmmm

So if you know me at all you know I love love love a chocolate chip cookie. Before 10 days ago I would pick a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie, the kind that is crunchy on the outside but gooey on the inside, over an actual meal all three meals of the day. Seven days after my last bite of sugar I was about to have a crash and burn moment. I had eaten my lean meats and fresh veggies. I had eaten an apple. I had done everything I knew to do but I NEEDED some chocolate and I wanted it to be in the form of a yummy cookie. So thanks to google, my go to for any question I may have, I discovered paleobrownies.com (yes that is an actual thing). Now granted I wasn't interested in eating the whole pan like I might have if sugar and flour was involved but I no longer have a sweet tooth AND I still haven't had a bite of sugar!

Try it and enjoy!

Makes 10
½ cup coconut oil (solid)
½ cup good quality cocoa powder
½ tsp ground cinnamon
½ cup coconut milk (publix was out of coconut milk so I used almond milk)
2 tbs honey
1 egg
1 cup almond meal
Good quality cocoa powder to dust (optional)

Instructions
Preheat oven 325°.

Place the coconut oil, cocoa powder and cinnamon in a bowl and combine well. Add the coconut(or almond) milk, honey, egg and almond meal and mix until combined.

Line a small brownie tin or cake loaf tin with baking paper. Spoon the brownie mixture into the tin and smooth the surface of the mixture.

Place in the oven for 20 minutes.

Remove and allow to cool to room temperature before transferring to the refrigerator for 60 minutes.

Dust the brownie with cocoa and cut into individual portions to serve. (optional)


I personal wasn't a fan of cocoa dusted on top (talk about bitter!) I actually ended up sprinkling a little honey on the top to give it the sweeter taste I was needing!

Paleo butternut squash lasagna

Yesterday I tried a paleo butternut squash lasagna. (Thanks to paleotable.com)

Ingredients
 
  1 package of hot Italian sausage (remove from casing)
  1 yellow onion chopped
  3 cloves garlic, minced
  1 15 oz container of your favorite all-natural tomato sauce (I used Mario Batali)
  1 small butternut squash
 
Preparation
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble the sausage and brown it, along with the onions and garlic.
  3. While sausage is browning, use a sharp knife to cut off the top and bottom ends of the squash. Peel the squash. Quarter the squash, making one vertical cut and then one horizontal cut through the entire squash. Remove the seeds and slice the squash lengthwise into ¼-inch planks.
  4. Lightly cover the bottom of an oven-safe dish with sauce. (This keeps the squash from sticking.) Layer about half of the squash, trying not to overlap the pieces, then spoon on half of the sausage mixture, followed by half of the remaining sauce. Repeat once, ending with sauce on as the top layer.
  5. Bake for 45 minutes or until the top is bubbly with a crispy, browned top. Right out of the oven, the lasagna may be liquidy. Let it set for approximately 30 minutes before cutting to allow the liquid to dissipate

If I do say so myself I thought it was pretty good! Make sure you have a SHARP knife and a good pealer becuase that was by far the most dificult part of preparing this meal.

I dont (yet) have a gun but I know how to use it.

I have always been as scared of a gun as I was of a spider. My biggest fear has always been to be taken at gun point then raped and killed. My obsession with shows like Criminal Minds makes me realize it is not the gun I need to be scared of rather the crazy people behind the gun. This week, thanks to my friend Susan, I took a basic gun class. We had two nights of fun facts about guns, basic shooting skills, and gun protection information. I actually took a written test and got a certificate. Yesterday I finally got to shoot my first gun! We went to Hoover Tactical Firearms (if you haven't been you should go! you can rent a gun and target practice as long as you want!) We all shot 50 rounds from both a revolver and a semi-automatic. If you are in to things like cowboys and like the loud boom and kickback then the revolver is for you. Me on the other hand like how the semi-automatic looks, feels, and not to mention I was a decent shot. I really enjoyed it and cant wait to go back target shooting. At the same time, just because I know how to use a gun doesn't mean that I hope I get the opportunity to use it in a real life situation. Next step... purchase a gun!
